Super Group supports water drive to assist communities in drought affected areas

Jan 29 2016

With severe drought conditions taking its toll on many communities across South Africa, the need for clean drinking water has reached crisis proportions. A number of initiatives and organisations such as Operation Hydrate, Water Shortage South Africa as well as schools, sports clubs and private individuals have mobilised resources to meet this challenge.

Super Group is proud to support this initiative with a number of companies within the group rising to the challenge by providing trucks to assist with the transport of the vast amounts of water that has been collected in urban areas for drought stricken areas in the Free State and Eastern Cape. “Super Group is a national transport and logistics company with our trucks on the road 24/7 delivering product throughout the country. We are fully aware of the plight of the farmers and communities in drought affected areas who desperately need our help,” said Jamie Broom, Chief Commercial Officer of SG Mobility.

Jamie was touched by the efforts of Shongweni friends Kendall Artz-Wood and Ilse Carlisle who mobilised their own social media campaign to collect 8,000 litres of water, 10 large round bales, 20 small round bales, 120 square bales and 60 bags of animal feed for the community of Winburg in the Free State, one of the areas worst affected by the drought. SG Mobility and Super Rent provided three 8 ton trucks with drivers free of charge to deliver the donation to Winburg.

In Johannesburg, SG Freight and SG Consumer responded to a call from the Emirates Lions to assist with the delivery of over 20,000 litres of water to Winburg. “Once we asked the Lions supporters to help and donate water, support has been flooding in,” said Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of the Golden Lions Rugby Union. “We thank Super Group for supplying us with a 35 ton truck and also Round Table Florida 21 for the 15 000 litres they collected in their community.”

The Emirates Lions rugby squad took time out from their gruelling pre-season training to help load the 20,000 litres of water on to the Super Group trucks provided by SG Freight and SG Consumer. The Golden Lions Rugby Union has challenged other rugby unions in South Africa to see how many litres of water they can donate.

Super Group would also like to thank the pupils and staff of Brandwag Hoerskool in Benoni and Maranatha Christian School in Glen Marais who did a fantastic job collecting water on behalf of the Winburg water drive. Finally, a big thank you to VSc Solutions, a subsidiary company of Super Group providing supply chain technology solutions, for their very generous donation of R10,000 towards the water drive. An amazing contribution and effort from the Super Group community and thank you to everyone involved.
