Enterprise development
Super Group strives to build profitable and sustainable businesses to the benefit of all its stakeholders and the communities in which it operates. One of the cornerstones of the group’s BEE strategy lies in its ability to partner with appropriate black companies to establish mutually viable business partnerships.
1. Putting the shine into job creation
StopWash, which was launched in 2001 as part of the group’s job creation initiative, has grown into South Africa’s largest, most convenient car wash business.StopWash has created more than 1,000 new jobs; 800 children now attend school as a result of their parents’ steady income and numerous StopWash valet technicians have been promoted to the role of supervisor or other managerial positions. When StopWash was first launched, we cleaned 4,000 vehicles per month. Currently we’re washing over 30,000 vehicles per month and the numbers are continuing to multiply. Our vision is to create 5,000 jobs by 2010.
2. Men on the Side of the Road
The vision of the "Men on the Side of the Road" project is to formalize job opportunities for casual labourers that sit at vaious pickup sites across Johannesburg. The mission of Men on the Side of the Road is to organise, train and place reliable, skilled and affordable labour in sustainable jobs. Super Group is proud to be associated with this unique programme that has created over 80 new jobs.
3. Owner driver scheme
Our owner-driver scheme continues to grow through the efforts of our Supply Chain division. During the 2008 financial year, our Freight business employed the services of 106 previously disadvantaged owner-drivers. In total, R154 million was spent on transport services provided by these owner-drivers.
We continue to assist these owner-drivers in their businesses and at 30 June 2008 we had advanced R34 million to them in the form of working capital. Assistance is also provided by advancing capital for the deposit on their motor vehicles. At 30 June 2008, these advances amounted to R5.3 million. In addition, support is provided in the form of a tax consultant and dedicated administration staff. Life insurance cover for all our owner-drivers is paid for by the group. The cost of this cover in F2008 amounted to R1.1 million.
Our Automotive business unit also operates an owner-driver scheme, with some 82 drivers nationally. Super Group accounts for over 90 percent of their business, which together with our guidance, support and management has resulted in these drivers building sustainable small businesses.
It's all about developing people
StopWash is living testimony to what people can achieve for each other if they take the time and put in the effort to help each other. Each and every person desires to live a positive life where they are recognised and afforded the opportunity to grow their skills and improve their standard of living.
Besides offering employment, StopWash has committed itself to developing employees who have demonstrated a commitment to the project and a desire to learn. Supervisor and Management programmes have been developed that teach the core skills essential to working with, motivating and managing people.
